september 12
On September 11, 1980, a group of military leaders staged a takeover of the government in Konya, just 12 hours after a rally where people had called for the implementation of Sharia law. This coup was an attempt to hide the embarrassment of the rally, but it ended up causing even more shame. It also made young people scared to express their opinions, and made it easier for those who wanted Sharia law to get their way.
Kenan Evren made the best description of September 12th in one of his speeches when the coup was most successful. He said that if he found out about any rumors that he was getting married, he would make it worse than September 12th. This is what he really said.
In 1980, General Kenan Evren declared that democracy was too much for the country and that the government was taken over. The country was kept in peace through torture and executions, and the younger generation was taught to be apolitical and obedient. This was a shameful moment in the history of the country.
